The Museum of Modern Art will host the North American premiere of the Mexican documentary film La Mami, the second feature film by Spanish-born director Laura Herrero Garvin, as part of the 2020 edition of ‘Doc Fortnight 2020: MoMA’s Festival of International Nonfiction Film and Media,’ taking place February 5 - 19 in New York City.
Inside the bathroom of the legendary Cabaret Barba Azul in Mexico City, La Mami offers support to the women who come to the club to earn money as dancers. Night after night the restroom is a safe space for the women. Priscilla is new to this world but she has to come, every night, to pay for the care of her sick child.
Hailed as “superb” (Variety) and “immersive and eye-opening” (Screen), Herrero Garvin’s brilliant observational documentary had its world premiere last November at the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA). The director will be in attendance in the film’s North American premiere on Saturday, February 8.
