MUBI, the London-based global curated film streaming platform, announced yesterday the plans to build its first physical movie theater, in Mexico City. Located in a former industrial complex in the Doctores neighborhood in the Mexican capital, the new cinema is being designed by architectural firm Armature Globale based in Milan, Italy.

According to the online platform, the project is an exploratory step in the transition from streaming to a physical realization of their brand. The new cinema comprises around 4,300 square feet and will have four screens: two dedicated to feature films, and the two other with a multi-functional capacity to show videoart and installation.

In the unveiling of the project, MUBI mentioned that the aim of the design of the new movie theater aims to overcome the rigid and dogmatic form of the ‘box’ as the ordering principle of cinema. Based on online research, the film news site La Estatuilla guessed the likely location of the new theater at 174 Dr. Erazo Street in the Doctores neighborhood, close to the trendy Roma neighborhood. An opening date has yet to be announced.
