The National Association of Latino Independent Producers (NALIP) announced today the winners of this year’s Latino Media Fest, which includes the documentary film Mucho Mucho Amor by Cristina Costantini, and Kareem Tabsch for Best Latinx Film, Brazilian-born filmmaker Flavio Alves for Best Latinx Director for his debut feature The Garden Left Behind, Colombian filmmaker Sofia Camargo received the Jury Award for short By The River, and critic Claudia Puig, president of the LAFCA was presented with the Excellence in Entertainment Journalism.

Mucho Mucho Amor, which had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival last January, is a documentary that tells the story of Puerto Rican astrologer and psychic superstar Walter Mercado, who discusses his life, career and post-fame seclusion.

Named of the best LGBT films of all-time by Rotten Tomatoes, The Garden Left Behind tells the story of a young Mexican trans woman who lives with her grandmother Eliana in New York City as she navigates her transition and the pair struggle to build a life for themselves as undocumented immigrants. As Tina begins the process of transitioning, Eliana struggles to understand Tina and fears that their life together in America is no longer what they bargained for.

NALIP’s Latino Media Fest Awards were announced in a virtual ceremony today hosted by comedian, actor, writer Al Madrigal. Awardees were selected by an internal committee of judges, as well over 20,000 member NALIP supporters voting via the NALIP newsletter.
