New Films by Rodrigo García, Sebastián Lelio, and Diego Lerman at the Toronto Film Festival

The Substitute by Diego Lerman

The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) announced today part of the lineup for its 47th annual edition running September 8 to 18, 2022, and that includes three films by Latin American directors: The Substitute / El suplente by Argentine director Diego Lerman, The Wonder by Chilean director Sebastián Lelio, and Raymond and Ray by a Colombian-born director Rodrigo García.

Screening in the Special Presentations section, Lerman’s latest film starring Juan Minujín, Alfredo Castro and Bárbara Lennie follows a substitute teacher in Buenos Aires who must step out of his teaching duties when one of his students is threatened by a local drug kingpin. The Substitute, a co-production between Argentina, Italy, Mexico, Spain, and France, is a remarkable reflection of the social tensions many students and teachers deal with every day in different corners of the Americas.

Also screening in Special Presentations, the most recent English-language film by the Academy Award-winning Chilean director Sebastián Lelio (Gloria, A Fantastic Woman) is based on the novel by Emma Donoghue and stars Florence Pugh as a nurse in 19th-century Ireland hired to investigate the case of a child who has not eaten for four months.

And screening in the Gala Presentations section of the Canadian festival is the intricate drama with audacious gallows humor Raymond and Ray. The latest from writer-director García (Albert Nobbs, Last Days in the Desert) stars Ewan McGregor and Ethan Hawke as long-estranged half-brothers who reunite to bury their father.
