Ecuador has announced Ana Cristina Barragán's debut feature Alba as its Oscar contender for the 90th Academy Awards in the foreign-language film category. The film, a co-production with Mexico and Greece which had its world premiere at the Rotterdam Film Festival follows the shy and lonely 11-year-old Alba, who is sent to live with her estranged father after her mother becomes bedridden. They hardly talk at first, but over time, they slowly get to know one another.

Alba, which had its world premiere at the Rotterdam Film Festival, becomes the sixth film from the South American nation to be submitted to the Academy Awards, since the country first sent a candidate in 2000.
