Antonella Sudasassi’s debut feature The Awakening of the Ants / El desperar de las hormigas has been announced as the Costa Rican Oscar candidate in the international feature competition. The drama, which had its world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival, is looking to give the Central American country its first Oscar nomination.
Set in the Costa Rican countryside, the film tells the story of Isabel, who is a good mom, a good wife, and a good daughter in law, but when her family starts pushing her to have another child, she will have to confront herself, her environment, and her family.
Sudasassi’s film becomes the eight Costa Rican Academy Awards candidate since the country first submitted a contender in 2005.
