POV, one of the most highly-acclaimed documentary series on television, has announced the acquisition of the Mexican film Things We Dare Not Do / Cosas que no hacemos by Bruno Santamaría, to be featured in the season 34 of the series on PBS. The documentary will have its national broadcast premiere on Monday, October 25, 2021.
Set in the small Mexican coastal village of El Roblito, Things We Dare Not Do tells the story of 16-year-old Ñoño, who lives what seems to be an idyllic existence with his loving family. But he holds a secret. Defying gender norms, Ñoño works up the courage to tell his family he wants to live his life as a woman. Yet when violence interrupts a community celebration, he must face the reality of a country shrouded in machismo and transphobia.
Santamaría’s film produced by Abril López Carillo and Field of Vision had its world premiere at the Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival last year, and it has played successfully at numerous international film festivals, winning several accolades including the Gold Hugo for Best Documentary and the Gold Q-Hugo for Best LGBTQ+ Film at the Chicago International Film Festival.
