The Peruvian film Retablo, written and directed by Álvaro Delgado-Aparicio has nabbed a British Academy Film Award (BAFTA) nomination in the Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer category, it was announced this morning. The Peruvian director holds a dual British nationality.
Retablo had its world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival, where it was awarded with the Teddy Newcomer Award and a Crystal Bear Special Jury Mention, and had a successful international film festival run. The film tells the story of Segundo Paucar, a 14-year-old boy wants to become a master story-box maker just like his father to carry on with the family legacy. On his way to a community celebration in the Andes, Segundo accidentally observes his father in a situation that shatters his whole world. Trapped in a chauvinistic environment, Segundo will try to deal in silence with all that is happening to him.
Additionally Mexican DP was nominated for Best Cinematography for his work in Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman,;The Two Popes, directed by Brazilian filmmaker Fernando Meirelles, nabbed four nominations for Best British Film, Best Actor (Jonathan Pryce), Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Casting; and Asif Kapadia’s Diego Maradona, on the Argentine soccer superstar, was nominated for Best Documentary.
The winners of this year’s BAFTA will be announced at a ceremony on Sunday 2 February at the Royal Albert Hall in London.
