Restored Films by Glauber Rocha and Fernando Solanas to Premiere at Cannes Classics

The restorations of two Latin American films will premiere at the 2022 edition of Cannes Classics, the French film festival’s section dedicated to heritage movies and preservation: the 1964 Brazilian film Black God, White Devil / Deus e o Diabo na Terra do Sol by Glauber Rocha, and the 2021 Argentine documentary Three in the Drift of the Creative Act / Tres en la deriva del acto creativo by Fernando ‘Pino’ Solanas.

Rocha’s allegorical black and white western Black God, White Devil, a landmark film of Brazil’s Cinema Novo, had its premiere in the official competition at the Cannes Film Festival. The film follows ranch hand Manoel who kills his boss after a dispute over money during yet another drought-blighted year in the Brazilian sertão, the arid hinterland of the north-east Brazil. Manoel and his wife Rosa flee, but instead of finding freedom and happiness, or at least expiation, the pair fall prey in succession to the whims of a black preacher who operates far outside the orbit of the Catholic Church.

The restoration of the Brazilian film is presented by Metropoles.com and Paloma Cinematográfica, and was restored from the original 35mm negative preserved at Cinemateca Brasileira and with a brand new 4K restoration by Estudios Cinecolor and Estudios JLS, Cinematographer Luis Abramo/Rogerio Moraes and with the supervision of Rodrigo Mercês.

The Cannes Film Festival is paying a last tribute to the great Argentina director ‘Pino’ Solanas, who died in 2020, with the screening of the documentary film Three in the Drift of the Creative Act, in which the filmmaker evokes creation in a work rich in sensibility and visual flair aided by stunning graphics. The Argentine director was dear to the French festival as he participated numerous times in competition and two times to Cannes Classics. The film will be screened with the presence of Victoria and Juan Solanas, and director Gaspar Noé.

The 75th edition of the Cannes Film Festival will take place May 17—28.
