The animated short film La Bestia, the thesis work by Mexican director Ram Tamez and Marlijn Van Nuenen and Alfredo Gerard Kuttikatt at the French school of Gobelins, l'École de l'image, was the winner of the Best Student Film at the 48th edition of the Annie Awards, which were announced last Friday.
The 2020 short film, which participated in the Mexican short film competition at the Morelia Film Festival, tells the story of a young Mexican smuggler and a little girl travel who travel unlawfully on top of a cargo train, called La Bestia, to get to the USA. An injury transforms his perception of the journey.
Born in Monterrey, Tamez has worked with several production houses in México for studios like Disney TV, Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network, working in 2d animation, storyboard, character design, layout, and concept art. In 2018, he received the ANIMEXICO scholarship granted by Guillermo del Toro to study the Master of Arts in Character Animation and Filmmaking at Gobelins, regarded as the most renowned animation school in the world.
The Annie Awards are presented by the Los Angeles branch of the International Animated Film Association, ASIFA-Hollywood, and since 1972 recognize excellence in animation in cinema and television.
