Six Latin American films—from Bolivia, Brazil, Chile and México—were announced today as part of the selection of this year’s Horizons section at the 78th edition of the Venice Film Festival. Four of those Latin American titles, three feature films and one short, will participate in the Horizons (Orizzonti) competition, while one Brazilian feature and one Brazilian short will be screened out of competition.
Two Mexican films will be competing for the Horizons Award for Best Film: The Hole in the Fence / El hoyo en La cerca, the second film by director Joaquín del Paso (Panamerican Machinery); and The Other Tom / El otro Tom by Rodrigo Plá and Laura Santullo, the filmmaking team behind A Monster with a Thousand Heads. The third Latin American feature in competition is El Gran Movimiento, the second film by Kiro Russo (Dark Skull).
The only Latin American short in competition is the animation Los Huesos by Chilean directors Cristóbal León and Joaquín Cociña, makers of The Wolf House.
Screening out of competition is the Brazilian short Ato by Bárbara Paz (Babenco: Tell Me When I Die), while the Brazilian film 7 Prisoners, the second feature film by Alexandre Moratto (Socrates) will screen in the new section Horizons Extra, which is an extension of the competitive Horizons section that focuses on new trends in world cinema, but will be less constrained by standards of length and format.
The 78th edition of the Venice Film Festival will take place September 1-11 in Italy.
