“Dos Oruguitas” performed by Colombian singer-songwriter Sebastian Yatra with lyrics written by Lin-Manuel Miranda for the Disney animated feature film Encanto, was announced this morning as one of the five nominated compositions competing for Best Music (Original Song) at the 94th Academy Awards.
Set in the mountains of Colombia, the animated film is the story of the Madrigals, an extraordinary family who live hidden in in a charmed place called the Encanto. The magic of the Encanto has blessed every child in the family with a unique gift—every child except Mirabel. However, she soon may be the Madrigals last hope when she discovers that the magic surrounding the Encanto is now in danger.
Born in Medellin and raised in Miami, Yatra is a popular singer with numerous hits. “Dos Oruguitas” tells the story of two caterpillars growing to become butterflies and find their own future. Other Oscar shortlisted songs include “Be Alive” by pop superstar Beyoncé, written for King Richard, and “Guns Go Bang,” by her husband, Jay-Z, from the western “The Harder They Fall.”
Additionally, the soundtrack of Encanto by Latinx composer Germaine Franco, was also nominated in the Best Music (Original Score) categoruy. The winners of the 94th Academy Awards will be announced on Sunday, March 27, 2022.
