Telluride Lineup Includes Four Movies by Five Latin American Directors

Four movies by five directors from Brazil, Chile, Cuba, and Mexico will represent Latin America at the 49th edition of the Telluride Film Festival taking place September 2-5 in Colorado: Sebastián Lelio, Alejandro González Iñárritu, Pavel Giroud, Daniel Zarvos and Liliane Mutt.

Having its world premiere at the American festival is The Wonder, the latest film by the Chilean Academy Award winner director Lelio. Starring Florence Pugh, Tom Burke, Niamh Algar, Kíla Lord Cassidy, and Elaine Cassidy, the English period drama is based on the novel by Emma Donoghue and tells the story of a nurse in 19th-century Ireland who is hired to investigate the case of a child who has not eaten for four months.

The most recent film by the Mexican Oscar-winning director González Iñárritu, marks the filmmaker’s cinematic return to his homeland after more than twenty years from his acclaimed debut feature Amores Perros. The epic and visually stunning film starring Daniel Giménez Cacho tells the story of Silverio, a renowned Mexican journalist and documentary filmmaker living in Los Angeles, who, after being named the recipient of a prestigious international award, is compelled to return to his native country, unaware that this simple trip will push him to an existential limit.

Additionally, two Latin American films will screen in the Backlot sidebar of the festival, featuring films about movies and portraits of artists, musicians, and cultural icons: Miúcha, the Voice of Bossa Nova, a biopic on Brazilian singer and composer Heloísa Maria Buarque de Hollanda, aka Miúcha, directed by Daniel Zarvos and Liliane Mutti; and The Padilla Affair by Pavel Giroud, about the Cuban poet Heberto Padilla who was imprisoned, by the Cuban regime in the early seventies, accused of being an enemy of the people, due to his writing.

Expected to attend the festival are directors Lelio, González Iñárritu. and the main cast of Bardo.
