The Mexican film 50 or Two Whales Meet at the Beach / 50 o dos ballenas se encuentran en la playa, the debut feature by director Jorge Cuchí has been announced as the only Latin American film in the 35th edition of Venice Critics’ Week, the independent and parallel section of the Italian festival organized by the Union of Italian Film Critics (SNCCI) and taking place September 2-12. The festival will be held physically and this year’s Critics’ Week includes a line-up of seven debut features and two special events in its competition program.

The film, starring José Antonio Toledano and Karla Coronado, tells the story of Félix and Elisa, both 17, who meet while playing the Blue Whale Game, fall in love and decide to face the game’s final challenge together: suicide. Produced by Catatonia Cine, the production company behind the 2019 Sundance hit This Is not Berlin, 50 or Two Whales Meet at the Beach was awarded with the post-production and distribution awards at Toulouse’s Film in Progress last April.
