THE OTHER SON Wins Top Honors at Colombia's Macondo Awards

The Other Son / El otro hijo, the semi-autobiographical coming-of-age drama by Juan Sebastián Quebrada, emerged as the top winner at the 12th Macondo Awards, presented by the Colombian Academy of Cinematography Arts and Sciences to honor excellence in Colombian cinema. This emotionally charged film, which delicately explores themes of grief and hope, won all seven categories for which it was nominated: Best Motion Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Editing, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Supporting Actor.

The Other Son tells the story of Federico and his brother Simón, who are enjoying their teenage years until Simón tragically falls to his death from a balcony at a party. Amidst his family’s turmoil, Federico tries to maintain a sense of normalcy while grappling with his grief and finding solace in a connection with Simón’s girlfriend, Laura.

Other winners at tonight’s Macondo Awards ceremony, which was held in Bucaramanga for the first time, included El rojo más puro by Yira Plaza for Best Documentary, El bolero de Rubén by Juan Carlos Mazo for the Audience and Best Sound Awards, and La Suprema by Felipe Holguín winning Best Cinematography. Trailblazing filmmaker Camila Loboguerrero received a Special Macondo Award for her career achievements.
