The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) has unveiled this morning the lineup for its 45th edition that includes two Latin American Films: New Order / Nuevo órden, the sixth feature by Mexican director Michel Franco, and the Brazilian film Memory House / Casa de Antiguidades, the debut feature by director João Paulo Miranda Maria. These two titles join the Mexican film Fauna by Nicolás Pereda, which was previously announced, as the only three Latin American productions at this year’s edition of the Canadian film festival.
Franco’s new film, whose world premiere was announced this week in the official competition at the Venice Film Festival in early September, is set amid both a street protest and a posh wedding, and is a timely indictment of class divide and abuse of power. The film will be screened as part of TIFF’s Contemporary World Cinema section.
Miranda Maria’s film, which had received the Cannes 2020 selection label but has not yet screened publicly, will be showcased in the Discovery section at TIFF. Rooted in Brazilian folklore, the lush and haunting film explores the racial tensions of modern-day Brazil.
Pereda’s ninth feature film, to be screened in the is a sly, comedic take on how violence in Mexico has infiltrated popular imagination. Additionally, TIFF announced the world premiere of Good Joe Bell by U.S. Afro-Latinx director Reinaldo Marcus Green that tells the true story of a father’s walk across the US to raise awareness about the harms of bullying.
The 45th edition of the Toronto International Film Festival will take place September 10-19.
