The groundbreaking Chilean stop-motion animated film The Wolf House / La casa lobo by Joaquín Cociña and Cristóbal León premiered this past Friday, May 15 in virtual cinemas to great critical acclaim. The film has a 100% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and was reviewed by numerous publications to largely raving praise.

The film was selected as a New York Times critic’s pick. “Astounding… The film surprises, with incredible force” wrote Glenn Kenny in his review. “Marvelous… a stunning, haunting, unforgettable accomplishment” raved film critic Michael O’Sullivan in his review published by The Washington Post and the Houston Chronicle.

Meanwhile, critic Dan Schindel wrote in his Hyperalleric review that the animated film “utilizes stop-motion to conjure a level of surreal grotesqueness that would make Jan Švankmajer blush.” And added “The Wolf House looks like no other film, which makes its horrific imagery all the more difficult to shake from your head.”

IndieWire’s David Ehrlich on his end categorized the film as “the darkest animated movie ever made” and as “powerful and uniquely disquieting cinema,” while Carlos Aguilar described it as mind-blowing in his review for The Wrap. “Chilean co-directors Joaquín Cociña and Cristóbal León graduate their uncanny yarns of sentient rooms and macabre beings from the short format into a full-length nightmare.”

The film is being released in the U.S. and Canada by New York-based distribution company KimStim and is available to watch online through numerous cinemas across the country. Click here to see the complete list of theaters and purchase your tickets.
