New York-based distribution company Monument Releasing has announced the multi-territory virtual theatrical release and festival tour for the documentary feature Pahokee, directed by Brazilian-born Latinx director Ivete Lucas and Patrick Bresnan, starting Friday, April 24 in over 50 theaters statewide.

Winner of the Prix du Jury at the Champs-Élysées Film Festival and the Knight Made in MIA Award at the Miami Film Festival, Pahokee is a powerful documentary follows four teens in an impoverished town in rural Florida as they experience the joys and heartbreaks of their last year in high school.

Hailed as a “lively and rousing as a generational snapshot, buoyed by the lovable, resilient kids at its heart” (Variety), the film had its world premiere in the Documentary Competition at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival, playing to a standing ovation, and has been an audience and festival favorite.

Lucas was born in Brazil and holds an MFA in Film Production from the University of Texas at Austin. She started her career in Mexico with a grant from the Mexican Film Institute (IMCINE) to direct the short film Asma, which was shortlisted for an Ariel (the Mexican equivalent of the Academy Award).

Lucas’ short documentary The Send-Off, co-directed with Bresnan, premiered at Sundance in 2016 and won jury awards at SXSW, AFI Fest, and the San Francisco International Film Festival. She directed Roadside Attraction, a documentary short that premiered at Toronto International Film Festival 2017. Skip Day, which she co-directed, premiered at Cannes and was awarded best short film. She is currently in production with her partner Bresnan on a new feature film about naturism in Central Florida.
