Watch the Trailer for the Mexican True Crime Doc THE LADY OF SILENCE

Netflix has unveiled this week the trailer for the upcoming true crime documentary The Lady of Silence: The Mataviejitas Murders / La dama del silencio: El caso Mataviejitas directed by María José Cuevas (Bellas de noche), which will premiere on the streaming platform on Thursday, July 27.

The film tells the story of the the hunt—and capture—of a most unlikely suspect of the killing of nearly nearly 50 elderly women, who were strangled in their own homes in Mexico City. At the dawn of the new century, a number of murders had the capital police at a stalemate: older ladies were being strangled in their own homes. The victims’ profiles were causing never-before-seen social outrage and media coverage. The Attorney General’s Office employed all its resources and efforts to capture Mexico’s first serial killer. Witnesses describe the suspect as tall, robust, and strong, passing off as a nurse to earn the victims’ trust.

In January 2006, after more than 40 murders, several failed arrests, and multiple contradictions, a woman was detained in broad daylight. Her name: Juana Barraza. Known in the world of lucha libre as “The Lady of Silence” and baptized by the media as “The Old-Lady Killer,” a nickname that was to become part of Mexico’s dark history as well as its incomparable pop culture.
