Things We Dare Not Do (Cosas que no hacemos), the second feature film by Mexican director and cinematographer Bruno Santamaría will have its world premiere at the 2020 Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival. Executive produced by Academy Award-winner Laura Poitras and Charlotte Cook, the film will be available to stream for members of the industry and press, starting on Thursday, April 30.
Winner of a Post-Production Award in the Cabos International Film Festival, Things We Dare Not Do features sixteen-year-old Ñoño, a teenager who dances, runs, and plays with the free spirit of the younger kids he hangs around in his small Pacific coast village. But when a killing disrupts the seemingly idyllic atmosphere, with its suggestion of corrosive machismo, Ñoño bravely takes the bold step of coming out to his parents, telling them he wants to dress as a woman.
With an exquisite cinematography by the director himself, the film takes the contemporary struggle for queer identity out of the usual urban setting, providing a fresh perspective on the issue and and a moving tale of emancipation.
