LOS ÚLTIMO FRIKIS

Cuba is world-renowned for its music, but ask almost anyone which music and they'll name Mambo, Danzón, Guaracha, or any of dozens of other Afro-Cuban rhythms. Few will mention heavy metal, but the genre is very much alive in Cuba and has managed to remain so despite decades of government disapproval and suppression. The godfathers of Cuban metal are ZEUS, a band that has bucked all the odds, making music and growing a following for thirty years.

After fighting for decades for the right to play their once-forbidden music, ZEUS embarks on a journey across the island for their first national tour. While on the road, the band confronts their own fragile place in the country's shifting culture, as a new generation turns to newer, sexier sounds. Returning home to Havana on the cusp of their 30th anniversary, the band faces an existential crisis, and the film becomes a reflection on time, art, and life's purpose.

Filmed over the course of ten years by first time feature documentary filmmaker Nicholas Brennan, Los Últimos Frikis is an often funny, always intimate portrait of one of Cuba's most surprisingly beloved musical groups.

Following the cancellation of the Miami Film Festival last week for the global pandemic emergency, feature documentary film Los Últimos Frikis, which was scheduled to screen at Miami’s Tower Theater on Friday, March 13, will have its festival screening online instead, starting Wednesday, March 18.
