EVERYTHING ELSE / TODO LO DEMÁS
(Natalia Almada, Mexico/USA, 2016, 98 min. In Spanish with English subtitles)
Doña Flor (Adriana Barraza) is a lonely cat lady and government worker in Mexico City, who is relentlessly indifferent to her clients as retribution for her life’s wrongs. Todo lo demás, the first fiction film from celebrated documentarian Natalia Almada (the great-granddaughter of Mexico’s controversial fortieth president Plutarco Elías Calles), composes a portrait of Mexican society through Flor’s mundane solitude and crushingly dead-end job, adapting a concept from Hannah Arendt that bureaucracy is a form of violence.
