Distressingly beautiful and subtly provocative.

WHITE ON WHITE / BLANCO EN BLANCO
A film by Théo Court
(Chile/Spain/France/Germany, 2019. 100 min. In Spanish with English subtitles)
Chile’s Official Oscar Submission
Set at the dawn of the twentieth century in Tierra del Fuego, a violent and hostile territory at the tip of Argentina where the continent meets the Straits of Magellan, White on White follows Pedro—played by Alfredo Castro, seen in many of Pablo Larraín's Chilean films, and star of From Afar and Rojo amongst many others—a middle aged photographer arrives to take wedding portraits of Miss Sara (Esther Vega Pérez Torres), the soon to be child-bride of the powerful landowner Mr. Porter. Fascinated by the young girl's beauty he betrays the rules and becomes entrapped in the unsettled territory as a complicit witness to the genocide of the Selknam indigenous people.
With an impressive cast and an elegant cinematography, White on White is a poignant slow-burn neo-western that delves on the dire effects of colonialism and the casual violence of its photographic representation.
