DONA FLOR AND HER TWO HUSBANDS / DONA FLOR E SEUS DOIS MARIDOS
A film by Bruno Barreto
(Brazil, 1976, 110 min. In Portuguese with English subtitles)
Based on the novel by Jorge Amado, this newly restored and "marvelously funny" (Time Magazine) Brazilian comedy follows the strange events that befall Doña Flor after she is left a widow by the death of her wild, irresponsible husband. (He died after another wanton night of carousing) Attempting to marry more wisely the second time around, Doña Flor weds a stable, but boring, pharmacist who has no interest in sex. When she discovers that her new sex life is less than satisfying, Doña Flor is visited by the sexy ghost of her late husband. When initially released, Dona Flor became the highest grossing box office film in Brazilian history as well as an instant international hit—receiving a Golden Globe and BAFTA Award nomination—launching the career of the “bewitchingly beautiful” (People) Sonia Braga.
