Actor Ricardo Darín and director Santiago Mitre

Argentina, 1985, directed by Santiago Mitre, was presented with the Golden Globe for Best Non-English Language Motion Picture (formerly Foreign Language Film) this evening, beating the favorite contender RRR from India.

Starring Ricardo Darin and Peter Lanzani, the film is is inspired by the true story of Julio Strassera, Luis Moreno Ocampo and their young legal team of unlikely heroes in their David-vs-Goliath battle in which, under constant threat, they dared to prosecute Argentina’s bloodiest military dictatorship against all odds and in a race against time to bring justice to the victims of the Military Junta.

In his acceptance speech, director Mitre stated "I want to share this with all those who have fought since the dictatorship to give us democracy in Argentina. Democracy is something worth living for,” while actor Darín said “after being world champions, this is a great joy,” referring to Argentina’s recent win of the FIFA World Cup.

The winners of the 80th Golden Globes Awards were announced tonight at a ceremony in Beverly Hills, California.
