Two Latin American films will be screening at the 52nd edition of the Telluride Film Festival, running August 29 - September 1, 2025 in Colorado: the Brazilian film The Secret Agent / O Agente Secreto by Kleber Mendonça Filho and the Mexican film The Reserve / La reserva by Pablo Pérez Lombardini.
Winner of the Best Director and Best Actor awards at Cannes, the latest film by director Mendonça Filho (Aquarius, Bacurau) is set in Brazil in the late seventies and follows Marcelo—played by Wagner Moura (Civil War) a technology expert in his early 40s, is on the run. Hoping to reunite with his son, he travels to Recife during Carnival but soon realizes that the city is not the safe haven he was expecting.
Based on real testimonies from environmental defenders, the debut feature by Pérez Lombardini follows an obstinate park ranger who convinces her community to expel a group of invaders from their natural reserve, only to unleash a far greater threat. Determined to stop them, she seeks the support of a fearful and indifferent community that soon turns its back on her. Left to confront the menace alone, Julia faces death threats and gradually loses everything she loves—except her dignity.
