Last week, the 46th annual News & Documentary Emmy Awards were announced by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. Mexican director Carla Gutiérrez’s directorial debut, which explores the life of iconic artist Frida Kahlo, earned three nominations in the documentary categories: Outstanding Direction, Outstanding Music Composition, and Outstanding Graphic Design.
An intimately raw and magical journey through the life, mind, and heart of Frida Kahlo, Frida tells the artist’s story through her own words for the very first time. Drawing from her famed illustrated diary, revealing letters, essays, and candid print interviews—and brought vividly to life through lyrical animation inspired by her unforgettable artwork—the film offers a unique perspective on one of the most enduring cultural figures of the 20th century. The feature directorial debut of acclaimed editor Carla Gutiérrez (RBG, La Corona), Frida presents a striking context for why the artist—and her art—remain as powerful as ever.
Gutiérrez, a member of the American Cinema Editors, has edited the Oscar-nominated films RBG and La Corona. Her work has received accolades at Sundance, Tribeca, Berlinale, the Critics’ Choice Awards, the National Board of Review, and the duPont-Columbia Awards. She has been nominated for an American Cinema Editors Eddie Award and an Emmy, and is also a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
Following the acclaimed world premiere of Frida at Sundance last year, Gutiérrez was honored this January with the Truer Than Fiction Award at the 30th Spirit Awards, which recognizes an emerging director of non-fiction features who has yet to receive significant recognition. The Emmy winners will be announced next month during a pair of ceremonies: News Night on June 25, and Documentary Night—where Frida is triple-nominated—on June 26.
Frida is currently available for streaming on Amazon Prime.
