Chilean filmmakers Amílcar Infante and Sebastián González Méndez were among the winners at the 32nd edition of the Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Film Festival, taking home the Emerging International Filmmaker Award for their debut feature Unwelcomed / Si vas para Chile.
Set against the backdrop of northern Chile’s most violent anti-immigration protest, Unwelcomed traverses the majestic Andean Highlands, the Atacama Desert, and coastal settlements to reveal the human face of Latin America’s largest migration crisis. With nearly 8 million Venezuelans displaced—the second-largest migration in the world and the largest ever within South America—the film explores rising tensions, cultural clashes, and the radicalization of border communities in Chile.
The Emerging International Filmmaker Award, supported by the Donner Canadian Foundation, is presented to a first or second-time international director with a feature film in the International Competition program. The prize includes a $3,000 cash award.
The 32nd annual Hot Docs Festival took place April 24 to May 4, 2025, in Toronto.
