Dear friends and colleagues of Cinema Tropical,
As we collectively face a tumultuous moment impacting each of us in different ways, Cinema Tropical wants to reaffirm its longstanding commitment to providing enriching and meaningful content that can serve as a powerful alternative to the grim news cycle and alarming social media posts that largely spread fear and anxiety.
More than ever, we feel that we can look to Latin American and U.S. Latinx cinema as a place for inspiration and insight. We believe it is the perfect time for each one of us to re-activate and protect our personal and professional communities, to take this unique opportunity to build new utopias, and to take steps to fight for them. We want to bring stimulation and creativity to our diverse audiences, hopeful that we are all up to the historical challenges that lay in front of us.
Since all of our public screenings and festivals have been cancelled or postponed for the foreseeable future, Cinema Tropical’s staff is reorganizing our curatorial vision and tools of distribution and information to bring select content to different local, national, and international audiences online.
As a mass of creative resources floods the internet providing overwhelming options of access across sectors, we believe with greater reason and passion in the urgent need for better curatorial strategies. In this way, we can continue to make sure that we’re providing relevant, inspiring, and energizing content to members of our community as they need it most.
In the next few days, Cinema Tropical will be announcing some new and exciting online initiatives as a way to navigate the surplus of recently-available digital content. Be sure to keep an eye on www.cinematropical.com as we start creating new resources and material for you to explore.
In solidarity,
Carlos A. Gutiérrez
