Film Movement, in collaboration with Art House Convergence, has announced the launching of a special virtual theatrical experience through their streaming platform Film Movement Plus to offer their current first-run releases and newly restored classics which include the 1976 Brazilian classic film Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands / Dona Flor e Seus Dois Maridos, which marked the directorial debut by Bruno Barreto (Four Days in September).
In an effort to support cinema aficionados and movie theaters during these difficult and unprecedented times, Film Movement Plus–Virtual Cinema will be promoted by both Film Movement and each participating theater across the U.S. through regular marketing channels. Additionally, moviegoers can visit FilmMovement.com to find out what virtual films are playing in conjunction with local movie houses. Virtual tickets will cost $12, and exhibitors will receive 50% of all sales.
Through their signature streaming platform, Film Movement Plus, movie exhibitors will have the opportunity to open their virtual doors and invite their patrons to rent new theatrical releases they’d otherwise be enjoying in their local art house theaters.
Based on the novel by Jorge Amado and adapted to the big screen by Eduardo Coutinho—who’d later become one of Latin America’s leading documentarians—the Brazilian sexy comedy features the breakthrough performance of Sônia Braga (Kiss of the Spider Woman, Aquarius) in the title role of Dona Flor.
Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands follows the strange events that befall Doña Flor after she is left a widow by the death of her wild, irresponsible husband. (He died after another wanton night of carousing) Attempting to marry more wisely the second time around, Doña Flor weds a stable, but boring, pharmacist who has no interest in sex. When she discovers that her new sex life is less than satisfying, Doña Flor is visited by the sexy ghost of her late husband.
When initially released, Dona Flor became the most successful film in Brazilian history. Its box office was only reached by a Brazilian production 35 years later by the 2010 blockbuster Elite Squad: The Enemy Within. Internationally, Dona Flor received nominations for a Golden Globe and a BAFTA Award.
