Film of the Week: MAGALLANES

MAGALLANES
A film by Salvador del Solar
(Peru/Argentina/Colombia/Spain, 2015, 109 min. In Spanish with English subtitles)
With Damian Alcázar, Magaly Solier, and Federico Luppi.

An ugly past returns to haunt taxi driver Magallanes when Celina gets into his cab. Though she doesn't seem to recognize him, he remembers her as the young girl he helped abduct into sex slavery for his colonel during his days as a foot soldier combatting Peru's Shining Path rebels. Partly to help Celina, partly to redeem himself, and partly to satisfy greed, Magallanes schemes to use the innocent woman to blackmail the colonel’s family. Meticulous planning notwithstanding, Magallanes naively miscalculates both the danger and the allure of settling old scores. Celebrated Mexican actor Damian Alcázar gives a stellar performance as the morally ambiguous Magallanes. Peruvian filmmaker Salvador del Solar's debut feature is a gripping political thriller filled with surprises.
