Guillermo del Toro, Ana de Armas, Diego Calva, and ARGENTINA, 1985 Nab Golden Globes Noms

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced this morning the nominations for the 80th edition of the Golden Globe Awards, which includes a handful of Latin American nominees: Cuban actress Ana de Armas, Mexican actor Diego Calva, Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, and Argentina, 1985 by Santiago Mitre.

Ana de Armas was nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama for her performance as Marilyn Monroe in the biopic film Blonde by Andrew Dominik; while Diego Calva nabbed a nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy for his role of Manny Torres in Damien Chazelle's Babylon.

Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio was nominated for three Golden Globes: for Best Motion Picture - Animated, Best Original Score, and Best Original Song (“Ciao Papa” with music by Alexandre Desplat and lyrics by: Roeban Katz, Guillermo del Toro).

And Santiago Mitre’s acclaimed Argentina, 1985, was the only Latin American title nominated for Best Motion Picture - Non-English Language (Formerly Foreign Language). Starring Ricardo Darín and Peter Lanzani, the film is inspired by the true story of Julio Strassera, Luis Moreno Ocampo and their young legal team of unlikely heroes in their David-vs-Goliath battle in which, under constant threat, they dared to prosecute Argentina’s bloodiest military dictatorship against all odds and in a race against time to bring justice to the victims of the Military Junta.

The winners of the 80th Golden Globe Awards will be announced at a ceremony in Beverly Hills, California, on Tuesday, January 10, 2023.
