The Mexican film A Cop Movie / Una película de policías, the third feature film by director Alonso Ruizpalacios (Güeros, Museo), was announced this morning as the winner of the Silver Bear for Outstanding Artistic Contribution at the 71st edition of the Berlin Film Festival, which was presented to Yibrán Asuad for his editing.
The Netflix original film, and only Latin American entry at this year’s official competition at the the Berlinale, follows Teresa and Montoya who join the police force, following family tradition, only to find their convictions and hopes crushed by a dysfunctional system. Their emotional bond becomes a refuge for the hostility they are exposed to. Through a bold experiment of narrative and documentary storytelling, A Cop Movie propels the viewer into an unusual cinematic space, giving voice to one of Mexico’s most controversial institutions.
Additionally, the Argentine film A School in Cerro Hueso / Una escuela en Cerro Hueso by Betania Cappato was the winner of a Special Mention for Best Feature Film in the Generation Kplus competition of the festival. The 71st edition of the Berlinale took place online March 1-5 only accessible to film professionals. This year’s film selection is expected to be screened to a general audiences in early summer.
