Oscars: The 2024 Latin American and US Latinx Nominees Are...

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences announced this morning the nominations for the 96th edition of the Academy Awards, which include a handful of nominees from Chile, Mexico, and Latino USA.

Afro-Latino actor Colman Domingo, of Belizean and Guatemalan descent, was nominated for Best Actor for his title role of Rustin by George C. Wolfe, making history as the first Afro-Latino nominated in the Best Actor category, and as only the second openly gay man to earn a nomination for playing a gay character.

Honduran-American performer America Ferrera nabbed her first Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress for Greta Gerwig’s 'Barbie.' In the film, Ferrera plays the role of Gloria, a human and Mattel employee from the real world with a special connection to the Barbie doll. Her character delivers an impassioned monologue about the impossibility of being a woman, a scene widely discussed from the blockbuster movie.

Maite Alberdi, who made history as the first Chilean woman to receive an Academy Award nomination in 2020 for The Mole Agent, has earned a second Oscar nomination this morning for her latest film, The Eternal Memory / La memoria infinita, in the Best Documentary Feature category.

Winner of the World Cinema Grand Jury Prize: Documentary at the Sundance Film Festival, The Eternal Memory delves deep into the story of Augusto and Paulina after Augusto's Alzheimer’s diagnosis. The couple struggles to reconcile their memories and reality as those memories slowly begin to disappear.

Latino producer David Hinojosa, of Puerto Rican and Mexican descent, earned an Oscar nomination as a producer in the Best Picture category for the film Past Lives, the debut feature by Celine Song. He became only the second US producer with Latin American roots to be nominated for Best Picture, following Panamanian-American Shaka King for Judas and the Black Messiah in 2021.

The Chilean feature film El Conde by Pablo Larraín was nominated for Best Cinematography. American DP Ed Lachman was in charge of the photography of this dark comedy/horror that envisions a parallel universe inspired by the recent history of Chile. The film portrays Augusto Pinochet, a symbol of world fascism, as a vampire who lives hidden in a ruined mansion in the cold southern tip of the continent.

Also nominated for Best Cinematography was Mexican DP Rodrigo Prieto for his work in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon. This marks Prieto’s fourth Oscar nomination after Brokeback Mountain (2005), Silence (2017), and The Irishman (2019).

Phil Lord, a Cuban-American producer, earned his third Oscar nomination for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse in the category of Best Animated Feature. He previously won this award in 2019 for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and was also a nominee in 2022 for The Mitchells vs. the Machines.

And even though is officially a Spanish production, Society of the Snow features a predominantly cast and crew of of Uruguayan and Argentine talent. The film received nominations for Best International Film and Best Makeup and Hairstyling. And lastly, Eva Longoria’s debut fiction film, Flamin’ Hot, received a nomination for Best Original Song for “The Fire Inside” by Becky G.

The winners of the 96th edition of the Academy Awards will be announced on Sunday, March 10.
