The Sundance Film Institute has announced a series of free, Spanish-language online webinars with three renowned Latin American filmmakers: Sebastián Lelio and Pablo Larraín from Chile, and Tatiana Huezo from Mexico.
The series kicks off this Wednesday, May 27 at 3pm EDT on the power of POV, featuring a live conversation in Spanish with Academy Award-winning director Lelio (Disobedience, Gloria Bell) on his use of POV to shape his audience’s relationship to a film and its characters. The chat will include scene breakdowns from his acclaimed films Gloria and A Fantastic Woman, and will be moderated by Sundance programmer Dilcia Barrera.
Lelio’s first three films gained him international attention and award recognition: La sagrada familia (2005), Navidad (2009) and El año del tigre (2011). His breakout film Gloria (2013) premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival, where it won a Silver Bear for Best Actress (Paulina García), the Ecumenical Jury prize, and the Gilde Award. Lelio’s next film A Fantastic Woman (2017) was an international success. It premiered at the Berlinale and took home the Silver Bear for Best Screenplay as well as the Teddy Award. Following these achievements, the film obtained The Goya Award, The Independent Spirit Award, and became the first Chilean feature film to win an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language film.
Lelio made his English-language debut in 2017 with Disobedience, starring Rachel Weisz and Rachel McAdams. The film earned him five nominations at the British Independent Film Awards. In 2018, he recreated his hit film Gloria for American audiences under the title Gloria Bell (2019), starring Julianne Moore and John Turturro. Lelio has also obtained the Guggenheim, Cannes Residénce, and the Daad fellowships.
The Sundance series will also feature director Larraín (Jackie, The Club, Ema), and the following month film critic Carlos Aguilar will talk with filmmaker Huezo (The Tiniest Place, Tempestad) on her transition from documentary to fiction.
