The Brazilian short film Sideral, the only Latin American production shortlisted for Best Live-Action Short Film for the 95th edition of the Academy Awards, is currently streaming for free on The Animation Showcase platform, through Wednesday, January 18.
Directed by Carlos Segundo, the 15-minute black & white short film is set in Natal, the Northeast of Brazil, while the country is preparing to launch its first manned spaceship into space. A couple lives with their two children near the space center, the husband is a mechanic while the wife is a cleaning lady, who dreams of other horizons.
Starring Priscilla Vilela, Ênio Cavalcante, and Fernanda Cunha, Sideral had its world premiere in the official Palme d’Or competition at the 2021, it won the Golden Hugo for Best Live-Action Short Film at the Chicago International Film Festival, and has played at numerous film festivals including Clermont-Ferrand, Telluride, Palm Springs, and the Hamptons.
The nominations for the 95th edition of the Oscars will be announced on Tuesday, January 24.
